The Sailor's Hornpipe: A Scottish Highland Dance
The Sailor's Hornpipe dance has its roots in nautical traditions. Thus, dancers appear in nautical costumes. It is called the "horn pipe" because in times gone by the dance was accompanied by a horn pipe (similar to a flute). Dancers imitate many of the activities that take place on board wooden ships (e.g., rope hauling and climbing shroud lines).
